The words your grandparents say to you usually sound interesting
When I chat with my grandma, I can only imagine the life she lived decades before. It definately is not the life I would like to live now or some other days but it has got its´ undoubtable magic. I interviewed my grandma many times and many times we talked about communism. We, youngsters, almost all of us consider this era to be an era of evil but I think it´s fine to know the other side, to listen to the words of people who actually lived during this time (because we practically did not). Elena, my grandmother, is 75 years old, she lives alone and sometimes she lives only with her rich memories. It was a pleasure for her to answer my few questions as well as it´s been pleasure for me to gain some knowledge. We mostly talked about the communism time and about the day when everything changed - 17th November 1989. Can you remember what exactly were you doing in the evening of 17th November 1989?
Of course. My very first memories about this evening are these: me and my husband we are sitting in the living room and watching the TV. Our faces are uncertain, we are not really sure what´s going on and we´re speaking slowly and quietly. We are fascinated, nor in the positive or negative way.
Did you not know what´s going on? Were there any signs of upcoming change in your city or not?
No, there were no signs of this change. In Lučenec, which is a small town, people did not know about what is happening in Bratislava or Prague. Well, maybe some youngsters or politicians or artist did, but we, normal people, did not have a clue what´s it all about.
Did you and your husband make any solution of all you watched on TV?
Well, my husband said it´s not gonna be easy. He knew that democracy, or rather said capitalism, is not just that wonderful as some people think. He was not against this change, we both were not against it, we just were not that enthusiastic about it.
So, you have not been for or against the change. Did you just wait what could happen?
Look, my and my husband, we had a nice and good life during socialism. We were not rich or poor, we just have enough of everything we needed. What we did not need was definately the change that was about to come. We were not sure whether new politicians will be able to rule and control the country and we were a little bit afraid about ourselves. On the other hand, it was fine to see that the demonstration was really velvet and noone was hurt or killed.
Did your life change soon after that?
No, it took a while. In that time I was already retired for two years. After some months I started to spot a new products in supermarkets and I realised that more and more people have started to visit churches. It became popular to be a catholic. Anyway, the prices of these new products were quiet high, but many people bought them because these had been new to us all. I remember these Danone youghurts, they tasted fantastic and they costed fantastic too.
After twenty years, what do you think about this change?
Well, if it was up to me, I would not have changed anything. I don´t think we are living better now. I am afraid to go out in the evening, I have to count every little cent in my wallet and I am sad when I think about young people who do not have where to work. I understand it´s good for some like you, people who can use the advantages of capitalism. But in the end I think it would be best if there could be some kind of compromise, just like Alexander Dubček wanted to do. The socialism with a human face.
